Precious Are The Natives - trylookinside

Kou. A favorite wood for calabashes. Many kupuna long considered this to be a native tree, contrary to recent modern botanical science that categorized Kou as an introduced "Canoe Plant". That all changed after the discovery of fossilized Kou at the Kauai Makauwahi cave worked by paleoecologists, David Burney and Lida Piggott. The first of the Kou fruit found in the muck there was dated at 5,000 to 6,000 years old, predating the the "Canoe Plant" era.
